Giving girls the code to a life in computing and engineering

An organisation encouraging young girls to develop an interest in computer science and engineering aims to bridge the gap in the number of women and men employed in computing fields, whether as engineers or developers.

Girls Who Code is a New York-based non-profit with the aim of providing an education in computer science to 1 million young women by 2020.

That target is driven by figures suggesting just 0.8 per cent of women graduating from American colleges received a degree in computer science and another claim that even fewer girls of high school age in the US are interested in studying computer science in college.

What’s stopping young women from taking up a career in IT?

A male-dominated IT industry is problematic to a workforce that faces skills shortages in technology. Women are crucial to keeping up with the demand in an ICT workforce that DEEWR predicts will grow by 33,200 workers or 7.1 per cent from 2012 to 2017.

The problem is there’s not nearly enough women entering the industry as there should be. The Australian Computer Society’s Statistical Compendium 2012 found women only make up 19.73 per cent of the total ICT-related occupation workforce, declining from 24.10 per cent in 2011.

How to make 2014 your career year: A seven-point plan

Many of us are returning to work today for the first time in 2014, refreshed and ready to make a clean start by believing we’ll handle the next 12 months differently to how we handled the last.

New and updated courses!

To ensure we are delivering what employers are looking for, we make sure our courseware is in-line with the latest technologies and software versions. Therefore, as required we update our qualifications, and introduce new diplomas.

Computer Power now offers three diplomas, the Diploma of Information Technology Networking, the Diploma of Software Development and the Diploma of Website Development.

• Additional study hours have been added to some certification courses to allow for a certification study allowance.

• Certifications have been updated to the latest technologies and now total 8 with the introduction of the CWNP Certification.

• Android development has been updated to latest version
• Various other technologies have been updated to latest versions such as Visio, Project, Test Manager. Visual SVN etc.

• Advanced Windows Store App Development using C

We have a new diploma, the Diploma of Website Development. This qualification is suitable for individuals wanting to enter the ICT industry with the intention of establishing a career in the web development sector. It is a hands-on qualification which will provide you with the skills to develop commercial web and mobile based applications. Starting from the basics you will quickly learn how to create new software products or customise existing software products to meet clients’ needs.

Our growing instructor team

Once again, we are pleased to announce new Academic team members. We have recently had Mahen Jayawardena and Renike Basile commence as Instructors.

Mahen specialises in Software Development. Mahen has a Ph.D. in Computing and brings knowledge and expertise as a university lecturer in computer science.

Renike holds extensive experience in the area of IT Networking and currently holds an Advanced Diploma of IT in Networking and Security, Advanced Diploma in Systems Engineering and a Diploma in IT (General). She is also a CCNA (Security), Adobe Certified Associate and Red Hat Certified System Administrator.

Both are looking forward to working with the Academic Team and supporting our students at Computer Power.

We now have seven Instructors to assist all students with their studies. Our opening hours will extend from January 13 to: Monday to Thursday 7:30am until 10:00pm, on Friday’s we will be open from 7:30am until 6:00pm. e-Campus students are able to access their courseware outside of these hours.
